DJ Book's "Love" Movement, 8/26/10

Friday, August 27, 2010
"What the world needs now is love..." -Hal David (lyrics)

Last night's WPFW show was lovely, as DJ Book set it off with an (almost) entire set of songs with the word "love" in their titles. As the song says, "it's the only thing that there's just too little of," so it can't hurt to focus an hour of crate-digging on the subject. Download the show; you'll love it!

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Pat Lundy - Work Song Promo 12"

It was a cold sunday morning in november. I didn't really want to get up early and hit the flea market, but i had the itch to dig, so i did. As most record buyers know, the earlier you get to the flea markets, the better your chance of getting lucky. So as tired as i was from dj-ing the night before I sucked it up and was able to get to the flea market about 8am. I wasn't among the first fiends there, but i was one of the 1st fiends to hit up "dirty reds" stall. And lucky for me, he had a fresh new haul of 12" singles that he just put out. I flipped through a few boxes and pulled some quality joints.....rigor mortis, peech boys, vaughn mason. The next box i dug in.....aaaah shit!!! I hit the jackpot, and this particular 12" was one of several gems i caught that day for dirty cheap. One of my all-time favorite b-boy/park jam joints!!

As The Tables Turn, Episode 2: Joyce Sims - All and All UK Remix 12"

Wednesday, August 18, 2010
Joyce Sims - All and All UK Remix 12"

I was dj-ing this party for the Univ. of Baltimore Black Law Student Association back in the day. The party went from good to great to bad and then to great again. As this was very early in my dj career I learned a few things.

1. Invest in a professional sound system.....house speakers and amp will not get the job done.
2. Trust your instincts.

At near height of the party, I was playing some club/freestyle joints....ala.....wish - touch you, handon & davis....dominitrix.....etc. I pulled out the joyce sims - all n all UK remix 12", mixed it in....party is rocking!!! Upon better judgement I decided to crank up the volume knowing that my system was pretty much at the max already.......bad move (see rule 2).......immediately the woofer coils blow and you can smell them burning. Fuuuuuuck!!!!

I got basically an hour left to close out the party and NO Bass!

Well, God bless my patrons because they all decided to move and crowd around the 2 speakers pumping only mids & highs for the rest of the night and kept partying almost like nothing happened. After the joyce sims, I went into hip hop for the rest of the night with the crowd rapping along to the lyrics of many of the songs.....and ironically, they were often louder than the system......LOL!!

Next day, I took all the gig money and deposited it all on an amp and two PA speakers.

SoulCeez and the Summer of Michael Jackson

Monday, August 09, 2010
The Soul Controllers are proud to participate in SoulBounce.com's Summer of Michael Jackson, a whole season's worth of content leading up to Michael's August 29th birthday.

SoMJ includes a Mixologist series, where four DJs each give their take on four themes: Sunshine, Moonlight, Good Times and Boogie.

DJ Stylus was first with "Sunshine", a study of MJ's early years.

Jahsonic got the "Good Times" assignment, which is all happy feelings.

Big up to DJ Qool Marv for the babymaking "Moonlight" mix and stay tuned to SoulBounce for the final mix in the series.

As The Tables Turn, Episode 1: Doug E. Fresh - I-ight Rmx Promo 12"

Tuesday, August 03, 2010
For everybody who still buys and supports vinyl in this digital mp3 age, we the Soul Controllers will be posting records from our collection and sharing real world stories and memories related to each piece...Enjoy!!

Doug E. Fresh - "I-ight" Remix Promo 12"

This was acquired around the time I first started getting on record mailing lists (those were the days!!!). I was in NYC visiting a few labels at the time with OG D.C. street promoter Duk-ki Yu. While in the Gee-Street offices, I noticed in their steel cabinet where they kept some of their promo 12"s for mailing out, there were 2 copies left of this 12". Now what's special about this one was it had the 'All-star' remix with the 'Eric B. for President' beat. This 12" was a very limited promo-only pressing that was super tough to get. I was able to secure 1 copy and boy was I syced! This joint is a classic and has rocked many parties from back then 'til now. Most cats had to buy the bootleg cause u couldn't get this from the record stores. Many DJs had the green eye of envy when I would pull this out on the set. In my Doug E. Fresh voice...."Aaaaaaaaa....Yooooooo.....Iiiiiiiiiight"!!!!!!!!!!!!
